Morpeth Harriers completed their 2019 series of Young Athletes Road Race Championships, sponsored by Reeves, the Pensions Specialists, on the evening of Monday 23rd September.
A total of 33 athletes toed the start line of the 1.25mile circuit of Lancaster Park, in the two events for Under 15 and Under 17 age groups of both Male and Female genders. Thirteen took part in the first event for Under 17’s, with twenty lining up in the Under 15 event. The Under 17 Women’s event saw Holly Peck take the Gold Medal, thus giving her an eighth consecutive title, having won all her age groups since her first as an Under 11 athlete. She posted a finishing time of 8m22s, winning by a margin of forty-nine seconds from Sophie Coaker (9m11s), who took Silver, with Kate Gaffing a further eighteen seconds adrift, securing the Bronze Medal. The Under 17 Men’s event, which had a total of ten finishers, was won by Rowan Bennett, who posted an excellent time of 6m39s, who beat 2017 winner Daniel Dixon’s time by two seconds. Bennett secured the Gold Medal ahead of Euan Duffin, who took Silver in 6m48s, with Tom Balsdon coming home third, a further ten seconds adrift, to secure the Bronze Medal. In the Under 15 Boys event, fifteen athletes faced the starter, and they were led home by Joe Dixon, younger brother of Daniel, who added another Gold Medal to his family collection, posting a time of 7m13s, finishing thirteen seconds ahead of Sam Tate, who took the Silver Medal, and Ryan Davies eventually beat off the close attentions of Bertie Marr to secure a Bronze Medal in 7m31s. Abi Leiper was an impressive winner of the Under 15 Girls title in 8m18s, finishing twenty seconds clear of Sophia Cunningham, who won the 2018 Under 13 Girls title. In winning the Silver Medal, Cunningham was well over a minute inside her previous victory. Third place and Bronze Medal went to Olivia Carruthers, who posted a finishing time of 9m28s.
