A number of Morpeth Harriers were part of Sunday's historic London Marathon which saw the two-hour record broken for the first time.
The Morpeth contingent included a fantastic run by Ryan Mcloud, whose time of 2:19:41 is thought to have earned him 1st place in the V40 category. Matthew Briggs ran a personal best of 2:36:22 and Andrew Mirfield also notched up a PB with his time of 2:42:41. Morpeth's other finishers included Robert Balmbra (2:43:32), Andrew Lawrence (2:49:44), Kate Seymour in a PB of 3:09:43, Anna Wright (3:29:32), Jane Kirby (3:33:35), and Tom Woodcock (4:00:13). In the women’s event, Tigst Asseffa, set a women’s world record in 2:15.41, after a battle with Hellen Obiri and Joyiciline Jepkosgei. It was the first time three women went under 2:16.00. But the men decided to go even better. Imagine beating the old world record and finishing third. Well that was the fate of Jacob Kiplimo who completed the course in 2:00:28. In front of him the magic two-hour barrier was broken by two athletes. Sebastian Sawa kept his winning streak going by winning in a wonderful 1:59:30 (4:33per mile), debutant Yomif Kejelcha finishing 2nd in 1:59:41, to complete a magical top three. * Also on Sunday the Washington Trail 10k organised by Trail Outlaws was won by Sunderland Harriers athlete Jordon Taylor in 38:48. The ladies race was won by Danielle Lazenby, who was 12th overall. Morpeth Harriers had one representative in Julie Roche who finished 87th overall and 2nd FV 50. The popular Quayside 5k this year incorporated the North East County Championships.
Carl Avery pulled away after a hard-fought battle with Leeds AC's Joe Firth, and back in-form Alex Brown of Houghton, to breast the tape in 14:28. Holly Lawrence followed up her 3rd place at Blyth 10k to pick up another Bronze medal in a chip time of 17:46. Further down the field George Lowry, another Nathan Shrubb-coached athlete, was 11th in 14:57, followed by Andrew Swinburne, who was 1st MV40 in 15:21. Other Morpeth finishers were: Sam Hancox 31st in 15:29, Thomas Prentice 35th in 15:37, Oliver Tomlinson (u/20) 40th in 15:46 (PB), Connor Marshall 16:03, Lee Cuthbertson 16:12, Daniel Craig with a big breakthrough run of 16:59, James Higgin 17:16 (PB), new recruit Jack Walker 18:26, Jason Dawson ran a fine 18:32 for 3rd MV55, and Thomas Pattinson 18:39. Morpeth Harriers also had representation in the B Race where Robyn Bennett (19:31) was 1st female, Richard Glennie was 1st MV50 in 19:35 and Tony Horsley was 2nd V60 in 20:36. The annual Good Friday Relays, organised once again by Elswick Harriers, took place at the Riverside Business Park early on Friday morning, with hundreds turning out to both compete and spectate.
The races for Young Athletes which kicked off proceedings were also among the first locally to use the new age group categories which are now mandatory and will affect the NEYDL fixtures this season. Niamh Balmbra was first back for the club in the Under 12s where there were over one hundred finishers, finishing 10th girl and in 37th place overall in the combined Boys and Girls event, with Jack Bell 49th. Five blue and white vests lined up in the U/14s, with the Fawcett brothers showing well at the front, with Joe just missing out on a medal in 4th and Will one place behind. Luke Thompson was 14th, Hector Ford-Hutchinson 17th and Izzy Cromar 7th girl and 32nd overall. There were two Morpeth finishers in the U/16s, with Jack Dhawar 16th and Jacob Thompson 43rd. The combined Women’s Senior and Veteran race, run over three stages, got the Relays off thereafter, with three Morpeth teams lining up in a field of some 111 complete teams. At the sharp end, Gateshead Harriers were on the day winners in a combined time of 34 minutes and 19 seconds, with Birtley AC 2nd in 34:44 and Sunderland Harriers 3rd (35:16). Morpeth’s A team of Robyn Bennett, Sophie Ward and young Charlotte Marshall finished in 40:02 in 23rd place. The B team of Nicola McCoy, Vicki Thompson and Jess Holman were 45th in 42:58 while the O/40s team of Kelly Clarke, Olga Bell and Sarah Henry were 12th O/40 and 63rd overall in 46:23. The final day’s race, for Senior Men over four stages this time, saw Middlesborough Mandale, winners back at the Signals in February, triumph once again here, finishing in a combined time of 38:00 in a field of 98 teams. They were followed by two clubs fielding a number of U/17 and U/20 athletes like many here, with Gateshead Harriers 2nd in 38:22 and NSP 3rd in 38:25. Morpeth’s challenge was spearheaded by Oliver Tomlinson on leg 1, with Connor Marshall, still on his way back from illness, O/45 Dave Stabler and O/35 Lee Cuthbertson rounding off the team, who finished in a commendable 7th place in 41:03. The B team of O/40 Andriy Volkov, Shaun Land, Rowan Bennett and O/35 Bobby Hagan were 32nd in 45:43. Meanwhile the O/50s squad of Dave Marshall, Rob Hancox, dropping down from the O/60s, Jason Dawson and Lee Bennett were most unfortunate to miss out on a category medal, finishing 4th and 60th overall in a time of 50:48. Well done all who ran. Full results are here. Thirsk 10

Leeds City’s Georgia Malir was the winner of the women’s race in 59 minutes, with City of York’s Leila Armoush 2nd in 59:08 and Faye Birkby of Pudsey Pacers 3rd (1:00:24). The race was won in Jack Cummings of Ilkley Harriers in 51:09 with Jane Grant of St. Theresa AC taking the women’s race in 59:51. North Tyneside 10k The ever popular North Tyneside – with a field this year of well over 1800 finishers – run over the course from the Meadowell Sports Centre in North Shields to St. Mary’s island via the fish quay, Collingwood Memorial and the Tynemouth and Cullercoats sea front, reverted to its traditional time of Easter Sunday. It was the expected NSP shoot-out at the front of the race, with past winners Jimmy Anderson and Dave Green going toe to toe the whole way, with Anderson winning out in 32:25, some five seconds of Green with Wallsend Harrier Tom Sursham 3rd in 33:18.
