In her second indoor appearance of recent time, Morpeth Harrier Jessica Young-Rogers produced a new personal best performance of 7.98s in the second round of her 60m sprint competition at the second Indoor Standards Meeting, held at Gateshead College on the evening of Thursday 12th December 2019.
Until 1st December, Under 20 athlete Jessica, had not made an appearance on the indoor circuit for almost two years, when she won her 60m Heat in the Sale Harriers Open, held at Sport City in Manchester, posting a new time of 8.05s, her previous best having been the 8.13s, which she had also achieved at Gateshead. On Thursday Jessica’s time was only bettered by Gateshead Harriers speedster Megan Costello, who clocked 7.89s. Earlier in the night, Young-Rogers, had also bettered her time with 8.10s, which clearly points to her getting back close to her best, following a fairly lean 2018. Another Morpeth Harrier in action on the night was Under 15 Girl Victoria Hodgson, who was having her very first taste of Indoor competition. The Dave Thomas coached youngster, who indeed shows immense promise, can be very pleased with the fact that her clocking of 8.89s for the 60m sprint was seventh fastest for her age group on the night, and ranks her 31st in the region currently. Three Morpeth Harriers clocked under 16 minutes at the Blyth Links parkrun
on Saturday morning as they took the opportunity to sharpen their speed before the coming weekend’s North Eastern Cross Country Championships at Alnwick. Daniel Dixon was 1st home in 15m 13s with Ross Floyd just behind in 15m 28s and Alistair Douglass 3rd in 15m 56s. King Edward VI High School Intermediate Boys team, all members of Morpeth Harriers,
finished sixth at the English Schools Cross Country Cup Final held at Mount St. Mary’s College, Spinkhill in Derbyshire on Saturday 7th December 2019. With many of the team having been hit by the sickness virus that had badly affected so many schools in the North East, the team still performed well for their school and the area, especially with one of their lead runners, Sam Tait, having had to drop out on the Saturday morning through ill health. On a fast course and in perfect weather conditions, Joe Dixon had a terrific run, finishing 6th overall. He was supported by Ryan Davies 26th, Bertie Marr 36th and Matthew Walton in 85th to complete the team of four. They finished 6th overall with all boys bar one being a year young. The race was won by The Judd School, Tonbridge with schools from Oxfordshire and London in second and third. The scoring four were also well supported by William Devere Owen, 94th, and Liam Roche, 110th. A special mention should be made of Devere Owen who only got the phone call at 7.30am that he was needed and duly responded by getting himself on the bus by 7.45. With most of the team still able to run in the age group next year, KEVI are already looking forward to next year where they will hope to better their placing. brother Chris at a windy Fell Em Doon 5k race in Ashington on Sunday 8th December 2019. There were also several good placings and prizes for female club colleagues, with Lindsey Quinn 3rd Senior Woman in 20m 58s, Sue Smith 1st Over 50 Woman in 23m 42s, Lesley Chapman 3rd O/60 in 25m 19s, Pam Woodcock 1st O/65 in 25m 45s and Margaret Macdonald 1st O/55 in 27m 30s. Andrew Dippie was also 4th O/60 and 28th overall in 22m 14s. We are now reliably informed that Paddy Paulsen is now home following her recent accident,
and subsequent stay in hospital, and operation. She will now try to get as much needed rest as possible in the comfort of her own domain, and in the care of husband Egil, and son Hans, and watched over by her adorable cats Suki and Soo. Paddy would like to take an opportunity to thank all her many well-wishers, and to give further re-assurance to her training group that she will recover and will be back with them as soon as she can. She further thanks those who gave assistance to her during her unfortunate period of pain, without whose help, it would have been a real struggle. |
