The 42nd Ken Jefferson Memorial Open Cross Country Races got the 2025/26 cross country season underway on Sunday 14 September.
On a course at Farringdon that used to host a NEHL fixture – and was notorious for the ‘jump the burn avoiding the abandoned shopping trolleys’ at the bottom end – there were races for all ages from U/11 up, and relays for Senior and Veteran Men and Women. Early in the season, and on pretty hard ground, but there were a handful of blue and white vests on display and flying the flag from Morpeth, and certainly a better showing than last year. Joe and Will Fawcett turned out in the U/13 Boys, with Luke Thompson also running. Finishing in 7th, 8th and 9th, they clocked times of 11:49, 11:59 and 12:09. Heidi Wilkinson and Faye Heatley ran in the U/15 Girls race, with Heidi 3rd in 11:11 and Faye 8th in 11:50. Daniel Craig had his first competitive outing in a blue and white vest since joining the club, finishing 6th in the U/17s in 10:11, with Emma Tomlinson 6th in the U/17 Girls in 12:43 and Charlotte Marshall 7th in 12:48. It was good to see Morag Stead back out in the Women’s race, finishing in a time of 11:11, although it was disappointing that the club couldn’t get two more Seniors around her. The race was won by Birtley, with Sunderland Harriers second and Crook and District third. Last race of the day saw a scratch Morpeth team perform highly creditably, coming away with a Bronze team medal having just lost out to Tyne Bridge Harriers for Silver, with Birtley, headed by Adrian Bailes, clear on the day winners. In his senior debut for the club, U/20 Oliver Tomlinson ran well to come home in touch with the leaders in 9:08, handing on to Tom Balsdon, whose clocking of 9:11 saw the club into second place. Veteran Rob Balmbra, recording 9:14, was only beaten in the run in by TBH’s Adam Pratt, who looked like he was a man with something to prove. farringdon xc relays 2025 - results.xlsx Comments are closed.
