Despite stringent efforts by respective Team Managers, (Mark Brown - Boys), and (Dave Thomas – Girls),
to turn a decent squad of athletes out for their second round NEYDL Division 1 match on Sunday 20th May 2018
at Whitley Bay, Morpeth Harriers face a certain uphill task in maintaining their champions status,
after finishing third behind North Shields Poly, and Yorkshire outfit Harrogate,
who very clearly won the first-round match in April.

The club had a total of nineteen A string winners, and sixteen B string successes on the day,
plus two 4 x 100m team victories coming from their Under 15 squads, both Male and Female.

Part of their Under 15 Boys Relay victory in 53.48s, was very much due to the presence of North Eastern Counties 800m Champion Ben Waterfield, who has certainly hit a huge dearth of excellent form, and he certainly showed excellent example of this, by winning no less than three of his clubs A string events.
He won his favoured 800m event, when producing an excellent new personal best of 2m09.63s.
Euan Duffin gave excellent B string support, by taking the race in 2m15.35s.

Waterfield also won the A string 300m in 41.82s, being also well backed by the B string victory by Dylan Gooding (46.03s), and Ben cleared 1.50m, to secure his third A string win in the High Jump, with Koffi Avornyo achieving the same height to take the B string, thus achieving another double victory for the club.

Another superb Under 15 Boys double win for Morpeth, came in the Javelin, courtesy of Daniel Dowd 35.32m in the A string, with Oliver Geoghegan securing a B string victory with 21.95m.

Morpeth’s Under 15 Girl sprint specialists were certainly in fine form, by securing three double victories in the 100m, 200m, and 75m Hurdles, and also took the 4 x 100m Relay in 52.11s.
Ellie Longstaff took the 100m A race in 13.53s, and Mia Belton produced a superb B string win in 13.73s.
In the 200m, Alice Geoghegan took the A race in 27.65s, and Longstaff took the B race in 28.24s.
Amy Lott won the 75m Hurdles in 11.64s, creating a new league record, and Alice Geoghegan backed her up well by taking the B race in 12.69m.

The Morpeth Under 15 Girl Field event performances were dominated by Jessica Gardiner’s record breaking victories in the Discus (28.03m), and Hammer (32.40m) events.

Morpeth’s best track performance in the Under 17 Men’s events, came courtesy of Tom Balsdon and Andrew Hudspith, who took the respective A and B string races of the 1500m in 4m22.25s, and 4m55.89s.

North Eastern Gold Medal winners Ethan Stephenson and Andrew Knight were again in impressive form.
Stephenson cleared 1.70m to win a competitive High Jump, whilst Knight enjoyed victory success in the Shot (16.81m), again eclipsing his own previous league record, and the Hammer (34.62m).

Knight finished second to North Shields Poly’s James Wordsworth in the Discus, as he threw 31.43m.
Morpeth did have excellent B string support in the Discus and Shot, courtesy of newcomer David Sanderson taking respective victories with 24.68m and 7.94m.

Morpeth’s best performers in their Under 17 Women’s section, came from Lily Heaton and Holly Peck, who achieved respective victories in the 800m (2m25.20s), and 5m11.74s).

The clubs Under 15 Boys enjoyed three double victories on the track.
Bertie Marr won the A string 800m in 2m35.72s, and Joseph Hudspith took the B string in 2m40.31s.
Ryan Davies (5m07.32s), and Adam Howliston (5m36.89s), triumphed in the 1500m.

In the 75m Hurdles Owen Omoigui (15.54s) and Harry Jackson (15.58s),
enjoyed respective A and B string success.

There were also some good Field event contributions from Morpeth’s Under 13 Boys,
notably Edward Gardiner’s victory in the Javelin with 23.61m, where he won by a mere 27cm.

Encouraging performances were achieved by Morpeth’s small band of Under 13 Girls.
