Posting a lifetime best of 15m25s, Morpeth Harrier Laura Weightman broke the Women’s course record,
when taking victory in one of Britain’s fastest road events on Sunday 11th March 2018. In what was her final outing on home soil before departing for Australia’s Gold Coast, and the Commonwealth Games in April, 18th placed Weightman, triumphed in the annual Podium 5k, at Barrowford, near Burnley, in Lancashire. Weightman now moves to fourth in the all-time rankings for the distance for Women, leapfrogging ahead of Jo Pavey, but behind legends such as Yvonne Murray, Liz McColgan, and number one Paula Radcliffe. Other Morpeth Harriers competing in the event were James Young, running in the colours of Lancaster University, who finished 16th in a new personal best time of 15m13s, and Nick McCormick, who was making a competitive comeback, and would be well pleased in finishing one place and one second adrift of Weightman.
