A number of Morpeth Harriers were part of Sunday's historic London Marathon which saw the two-hour record broken for the first time.
The Morpeth contingent included a fantastic run by Ryan Mcloud, whose time of 2:19:41 is thought to have earned him 1st place in the V40 category. Matthew Briggs ran a personal best of 2:36:22 and Andrew Mirfield also notched up a PB with his time of 2:42:41. Morpeth's other finishers included Robert Balmbra (2:43:32), Andrew Lawrence (2:49:44), Kate Seymour in a PB of 3:09:43, Anna Wright (3:29:32), Jane Kirby (3:33:35), and Tom Woodcock (4:00:13). In the women’s event, Tigst Asseffa, set a women’s world record in 2:15.41, after a battle with Hellen Obiri and Joyiciline Jepkosgei. It was the first time three women went under 2:16.00. But the men decided to go even better. Imagine beating the old world record and finishing third. Well that was the fate of Jacob Kiplimo who completed the course in 2:00:28. In front of him the magic two-hour barrier was broken by two athletes. Sebastian Sawa kept his winning streak going by winning in a wonderful 1:59:30 (4:33per mile), debutant Yomif Kejelcha finishing 2nd in 1:59:41, to complete a magical top three. * Also on Sunday the Washington Trail 10k organised by Trail Outlaws was won by Sunderland Harriers athlete Jordon Taylor in 38:48. The ladies race was won by Danielle Lazenby, who was 12th overall. Morpeth Harriers had one representative in Julie Roche who finished 87th overall and 2nd FV 50.
