The Morpeth 10k, organised by RunThrough, will take place on the morning of Sunday 15 June with a 9am start.
Well received in the town, last year’s event proved to be hugely popular with nearly 1,000 finishers and although this year’s race sees a change of course, entries remain high. The course change has unfortunately been forced on the organisers by continued work on Mitford Road at its junction with High House Lane, and Northumberland County Council denying RunThrough permission to use the route. This has meant a change to a demanding out-and-back course starting in the town centre, up Newgate Street to Fulbeck, then a long haul via the bridge over the bypass to Hebron and back. Full road closures will again be in place. Although Morpeth Harriers do not have responsibility for the event, we are rewarded generously by RunThrough for providing marshals on the day. Last year, the provision of marshals and the distribution of flyers in advance (currently under way) netted us over £1,000. Many thanks to all those who have already volunteered, but we are still nowhere near the 50 marshals we’re looking for. (Please note that young athletes can also marshal, and normally will be placed at the finish to distribute water and medals.) So please, if you can find three hours on the morning of Sunday 15 June, your help will be very much welcome. It will be an early 8/8.15 am start but should all be over by 11. This is not just a valuable source of income for us, but a way of helping to promote ourselves and our sport. And as many of you will know from doing parts of the route yourselves, competitors will need lots of support! Contact volunteer coordinator Peter Scaife by email at [email protected]
