Linden Homes Athlete of the Month Award
Morpeth Harriers & Athletics Club are very pleased to announce that their latest recipient of the Linden Homes Athlete of the Month for April 2016,
is Under 13 Girl Rhiannon Hedley.
Hedley who was also a prominent force in the clubs Road & Cross Country squad, began her 2016 track campaign well by winning the 1500m at the opening meeting of the North Eastern Grand Prix series, in a time of 5m10.6s,
which was agonisingly just four seconds adrift of her lifetime best,
which nevertheless took her to the top of the regional rankings,
and saw her in thirteenth place nationally.
It also saw her achieve an award as Female Athlete of the Meeting
for her efforts.
Rhiannon’s award concludes the list of recipients of Linden Homes achievers for 2015-16, and she now joins Ruaridh Lang (May 2015), Bobbie Griffiths (June 2015), Scott Beattie (July 2015), David Thomas (August 2015),

Linden Homes Athlete of the Month Award
Breaking the Under 13 Girls course record by one second at the
annual Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races,
and winning the event outright, plus good placings in the final
Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League,
the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships,
and the English Schools Cross Country Championships,
undoubtedly put Lily Heaton very much in the frame for achieving
the Linden Homes Morpeth Harriers Athlete of the Month Award for March 2016.
Lily, who is now competing in the Under 15 age group for Track and Field,
is pictured receiving her well deserved Certificate of Achievement from
Morpeth Harriers Press Officer George Patterson

Linden Homes Athlete of the Month Award
Morpeth Harriers latest recipient of the Linden Homes Athlete of the Month Award was the perfect example of a very young talent who decided to try out an event, took a liking for it, worked on it with more than a little help from her coach, and then paid rich dividends by becoming a regional champion, and excelled as a winner in every sense of the word, and climbed up the UK Rankings, where she now sits as nineteenth in her Under 13 age group for 60m Hurdles on the Indoor Circuit.
Amy Lott became the North Eastern Counties Indoor Champion at the very end of January, however during February she excelled even more by improving her time to 10.44s at an Indoor Standards Meeting at Gateshead, her previous best having been the 10.55s that she had clocked at the January Championships.
Her progression has been quite remarkable under the watchful eye of her Coach Dave Thomas, her first attempt at the event having been in early January,
where she had clocked a best of 10.83s.

as Morpeth Harriers Athlete of the Month for February 2016,
from the club’s Press Officer George Patterson,

She is eagerly looking forward to the forthcoming outdoor season,
when she will compete in her club’s drive to hopefully retain their
North East Youth Development League Division 1 crown,
when she will play a big role in the second year of the Under 13 Girls section,
and hopefully other major competitions will also be on offer to this young talent.

Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races
Morpeth Harriers were well to the fore amongst the honours in the
annual Elswick Harriers Good Friday Road Races,
held on the Newburn Riverside Business Park.
Despite a stiff breeze, runners efforts were blessed
with warm early spring sunshine,
which made conditions good for relatively fast times.
Morpeth Harriers had two individual winners in the younger age group 1.6mile events,
plus an outstanding team victory in the Under 15 Boys event.
Led by Daniel Dixon, who broke the course record, when he clocked 7m56s,
for individual victory, excellent added team support by
Taylor Glover (2nd) 8m10s, and Ross Charlton (5th) 8m25s,
ensured a rampant success for Morpeth.
Also prominent for the club in this event was Matthew Waterfield,
who managed to finish tenth in 8m54s.

Linden Homes Athlete of the Month
Under 15 Boy Rory Leonard is the latest recipient of the
Linden Homes Morpeth Harriers Athlete of the Month Award.
Leonard received his award certificate for his achievements in January,
from the clubs Press Officer George Patterson, to warm applause from his club colleagues, at their club house on Mitford Road, in Morpeth, on the evening of Monday 22nd February 2016.
In a very varied month of activity, Rory competed in the final of the Indoor 1500m in Sheffield, where he finished fifth, where he was up against more Senior opposition.
He finished fourth in the Intermediate Boys event at the Northumberland Schools Cross Country, at Temple Park, South Shields, which following an Inter Counties appearance, has since led him to a much deserved slot on the Northumberland team for the forthcoming English School’s Cross Country Championships in Nottingham.
However his crowning glory on the month, was finishing seventh in the
Under 15 Boys event at the Northern Cross Country Championships in Blackburn,
where he led his club to fifth team place,
and just adrift of a podium place both individually, and also on a team front.
Rory only began his running career last August,
after many years enjoying success on the football field.
Coming from a family with a background in road and cross country running,
he has taken to the sport very naturally, and since his link up with Morpeth Harriers,
he has progressed quite rapidly, and is now very much a fixture in their Junior ranks,
and has been very well accepted by his club colleagues, and coaches,
and in a very short period of time he has contributed largely to some very welcome successes.

in very wintry conditions, claiming the individual Silver Medal,

Linden Homes Athlete of the Month
Having only just missed out on the previous months vote,
Holly Peck certainly maintained her excellent competitive form
throughout the month of October 2015, enough to convince the judges to award her with a Certificate of Achievement as the Linden Homes Morpeth Athlete of the Month.
Holly, pictured right receiving her award from the clubs Press Officer George Patterson, at the clubhouse on Mitford Road, Morpeth, on the evening of Monday 16th November 2015, had impressed at the English National Cross Country Relays in Mansfield, where she had led her club to seventh team

The third set of races in the 2015 series of Morpeth Harriers Young Athletes Road Championships,
sponsored by Linden Homes, took place on Lancaster Park on Monday 12th October 2015.

Thankfully the heavy showers that had fallen just before the event gave way to a light drizzle,
backed by a mild breeze, and runners faced very much near perfect conditions
for their journey round the 1.3mile one lap course.
The Under 17 Men’s event was won by Scott Beattie,

when he came home in 7m05s, eight seconds ahead

2015 Northern Young Athletes Road Relay Championships
Some excellent performances, saw Morpeth Harriers Young athletes
win Bronze medals at the Northern Athletics
Young Athletes Road Relay Championships,
held at Stanley Park, Blackpool,
on Saturday 19th September 2015.
Marginally the clubs best performers on the day were their Under 13 Girls,
who following three excellent legs, where they never budged outside the top three,
eventually came through, courtesy of a very energised Holly Peck
on the final third leg, to grab Silver medals.
Peck’s second fastest of the leg of 12m11s over the 3.2k course
was enough to give them nearly a minute of daylight over third placed
Keighley and Craven, who had led throughout the first two legs,
and had unfortunately slipped back when it mattered.
Holly’s time was seventh fastest of the day; however she was just unable
to get to level terms with the Salford Harriers runner in front of her,
as she only lost out for Gold by a margin of twenty five seconds.
Lily Heaton on first leg for Morpeth, undoubtedly had the clubs run of the day,
clocking 12m04s on the first leg, which proved to be fourth fastest overall,
which speaks volumes on her performance improvement,
and living very much in the shadow of club colleagues Peck, and Rhiannon Hedley.
It was Hedley who produced a very stable performance on the second leg,
to hold on to third place with her clocking of 12m58s.
The efforts of this squad on the day were very warmly
applauded by their coach and Team Manager Mike Bateman.
Morpeth Harriers Under 17 Men finished an excellent seventh in their 3 x 3.2k Relay,
no doubt boosted by the performance of final leg runner Scott Beattie,
whose 11m39s, was not only the fastest of the leg,
but also the fastest of the day by a ten second margin.
Jacob Hopkins had the squad in 27th place on Leg One with his clocking of 13m27s,
however Kieran Hedley, already having witnessed his younger sister’s medal
winning efforts in the earlier Under 13 Girls event, ran well to climb a further
eleven places on the second leg,
his clocking of 12m18s proving to be the third fastest of the leg.
It was then left to Beattie to provide the final leg flourish,
and he certainly carried out his duties to the letter.
Morpeth Harriers had two squads who lined up to face the
starter in the Under 15 Boys 3 x 3.2k event.
The clubs A team finished 13th and the B team finished 31st.
Ross Charlton had the A team in 26th place in 11m13s as he
handed over the reins to Joe Dowd, who managed to climb
an excellent nine places, as he got round his leg in 11m15s,
which was the eleventh fastest overall on the leg.
Third and final leg runner Connor Marshall also produced an
excellent run of 11m18s, to gain a further four places.
The Morpeth Harriers Under 15 Boys B team had Daniel Melling on lead off leg,
and he managed a clocking of 12m08s, as he came home in 37th place.
Second leg saw Matthew Waterfield improve by four places,
as he got round the course in 12m24s.
Final Leg runner Sam Bradley took the squad home to 31st spot,
with his clocking of 13m19s.
Morpeth Harriers very young and relatively inexperienced Under 13 Boys squad
produced some excellent performances collectively to get a final placing of 16th in their 3 x 3.2k event.
Andrew Hudspith ran a superb first leg of 11m53s, to come home in 20th place.
Dylan Davies improved by two places on the second leg with his clocking of 12m19s.
Ben Walker gained a further two places on the third and final leg, when he clocked 12m24s.

Linden Homes Athlete of the Month Award In conjunction with their current year long sponsorship deal with Linden Homes, Morpeth Harriers & Athletics Club are pleased to announce that their Athlete of the Month award for June 2015, has gone to prolific Under 15 Girl thrower Bobbie Griffiths. This is the second award in the present link with the Property Developer, and it is the second month in a row that the clubs award has gone to one of their Field eventers. Much talented Bobbie received her award after some superb performances during the period covered, which included, a double victory in the Javelin and Discus at the Northumberland Schools Championships with respective bests of 35.62m, and 22.04m, the former being two and a half metres inside the English Schools Standard. Griffiths followed this up a week later at the Schools Inter Counties Championships with another double victory in the same events, however in her clubs NEYDL fixture at Middlesbrough another week later, she completed a hat-trick of wins, again in the Javelin with a best of 34.23m and Discus with 21.96m, but this time adding the Hammer to her successes, throwing a best of 23.01m. |
Concluding, over the period of June,
her improvement in her main event the Javelin has been just short of two metres, with her best being the 36.63m, which she achieved in the English Schools Cup in Hull. Bobbie is pictured above receiving her much deserved Certificate of Achievement from her very proud Coach Dave Thomas at the KEVI Track on Monday 17th August 2015. Griffiths is very indebted to Thomas, who has worked hard with her to help her make her achievements, which have since continued to blossom, and at the time of reporting, she is ranked 15th in the country for the Under 15 Women’s Javelin event. In the Discus she is ranked 31st, and more recent achievements in the Hammer have seen her rise to 132nd. On a regional basis she is ranked 1st in both the Javelin and Discus, and is now second in the Hammer. In the Shot Putt, by comparison which she very rarely does, she has a current UK ranking of 182nd, and regionally she is ranked fifth. |
Northern Athletics U/17, U/15 & U/13 Track & Field Championships The first day of the combined Northern Athletics Under 13/15/17 Track and Field Championships, held at Middlesbrough Sports Village on Saturday 15th August 2015, saw two young Morpeth Harriers field eventers achieve respective medals. Bobbie Griffiths won a superb Silver Medal in the Under 15 Girls Javelin Final, throwing a best of 35.69m, which although was a little short of her lifetime best, still earned her a well deserved podium place. Another podium place well earned was by Under 17 Man David Thomas, who produced a lifetime best of 12.02m in the Triple Jump, to take a Bronze medal. On the second day of the championships, Bobbie Griffiths, fresh from her medal winning efforts on the first day, returned to the venue to take the Bronze medal in the Under 15 Girls Discus. She fought a tight battle for third place with Amber Valley’s Lily Naylor, however she squeezed into the medal winning slot by a mere 14cm with her best throw of 26.88m. |
Morpeth Harriers were crowned Division 1 Champions for 2015 at their final round North East Youth Development League fixture, held at the new Middlesbrough Sports Village on Sunday 19th July. In doing so, they were winning the title that they first won in 2013, the formation year of the league. Again there were some excellent performances across the three age groups and both genders, which more than pleased the clubs hard-working Team Managers Paddy Paulsen, Steve Garrett, Hans Paulsen (Male), and Mark Brown and Janet Peck (Female).
