Morpeth Harriers host the third-round match of the NEYDL
Track & Field League Division 1 on Sunday 25th June 2017. It will be held at the Morpeth Athletics Track at KEVI School, and Track Events will get underway at 11.15am, with Field action beginning fifteen minutes later at 11.30am. Currently Morpeth Harriers are level on match points with most feared opponents Harrogate, however do hold a slender lead on league points. A home win for Morpeth is imperative if they are to stand any chance of regaining the league title that they lost to Blaydon Harriers last year by a very slender margin. Everything will certainly be down to the closing match at Hexham on Sunday 16th July for an exciting finale. The annual Newburn River Run on Wednesday 14th June 2017, hosted by Elswick Harriers,
attracted a total finishing field of 356 runners, and was won by Sunderland Harrier Kevin Calvert, formerly of Morpeth Harriers, who posted a finishing time of 32m06s, winning by twenty-three seconds from Tyne Bridge Harrier Marc Fenwick, with another former Morpeth Harrier, Kurt Heron of Ashington Hirst Running Club finishing third in 32m55s. The Women’s race was won by Morpeth Harrier Jane Hodgson, who was also first Veteran She finished 13th overall, posting a finishing time of 36m38s, finishing 110 seconds clear of second placed Sophie Marr of Tyne Bridge Harriers. First Morpeth Harrier across the finish line overall, was Mark Snowball, who finished eighth in 34m25s. Other Morpeth Harriers finishers on the night were Paul Waterston (19th) (2nd O/50 Man) 37m06s, Phil Walker (21st) (3rd O/50 Man) 37m16s, Mark Cockburn (27th) 38m16s, Mike Winter (35th) (5th O/45 Man) 39m01s, Jim Alder (79th) (6th O/55 Man) 41m38s, Peter Scaife (85th) (7th O/55 Man) 42m00s, and Mike Steven (99th) (8th O/55 Man) 42m49s. Kieran Hedley of Morpeth Harriers ran a new personal best of 3m57.33s, when finishing fourth in the Men’s 1500m B race, at the BMC Gold Standards Meeting, held at Stretford on the evening of Tuesday 13th June 2017. This is definitely the result that he was looking for in anticipation of winning a place to run for Northumberland at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham in July. BMC Regional Standards Meeting Meanwhile, over in Leeds at Becket University Campus, on the evening of Tuesday 13th June 2017, fellow Morpeth Harrier Philip Winkler finished ninth in the 1500m B race at the BMC Regional Standards Meeting, posting a time of 4m09.84s. Having only her third track outing of the season, Morpeth Harriers Commonwealth, and European medallist
Laura Weightman posted her second fastest time ever, when she finished fourth to Netherlands Sifan Hassan, in the Women’s 1500m at the IAAF World Challenge meeting, held in Hengelo on Sunday 11th June 2017. She finished an excellent fourth in 4m01.95s, only just over four seconds adrift of the Dutch winner, and only mere fractions adrift of second placed Besu Sado of Ethiopia, and third placed Winny Chebet of Kenya. Behind Weightman in eighth and ninth places, were fellow Brits Sarah McDonald (4m05.83s), of Birchfield Harriers, formerly of Jarrow and Hebburn, and Melissa Courtney (4m06.0s), of Shaftesbury Barnet, who are also currently ranked third and fourth respectively in the UK rankings for the distance this year, ahead of Aldershot distance specialist Steph Twell. Weightman’s time is also the second fastest by a Brit over the three and three-quarter lap distance this year, only headed by Dundee’s Laura Muir, who posted 4m00.47s in Oregon at the end of May. This factor will no doubt please Weightman, with only a few weeks to go to the UK Trials in Birmingham, and indicates that she is rounding into her best form, ahead of the very important, and most prestigious World Championships, on home soil in London in August. |
