Morpeths Ross Floyd put a somewhat disappointing run at last week’s Quayside 5k
behind him by finishing 2nd in Low Fell Running Club’s annual Watergate 5k trail race on Thursday 31st August 2017. After a tussle with Gateshead Harriers stalwart Conrad Franks, Floyd finished some 4 seconds behind him in a time of 15m 50s. Meanwhile over 60 veteran David Nicholson finished in 36th place in a time of 19m 10s to claim a gold medal in the North East Masters Athletics Association Championships held in conjunction with the race. Report by Peter Scaife Several athletes from Morpeth Harriers were in action at the
Tartan Games held at Gateshead Stadium on Sunday 27th August 2017. In the Field events, Ethan Stephenson won both the Under 15 High Jump and Long Jump with respective marks of 1.78 metres and 5.81 metres both PBs. Bobbie Griffiths won the Javelin in both the the Under 20 and Under 17 Womens competition, 36.62metres in the the older section and heavier implement, and 42.64 metres in the younger age group. annual Teviotdale Harriers 10k road race in Hawick on Sunday 27th August 2017. Harding finished in a time of 31 minutes 40 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of his nearest rival, Callum Reid of Edinburgh Harriers (33m 46s). Report by Peter Scaife Andrew Knight of Morpeth Harriers won his second English Championship medal, when he gained a Silver Medal in the annual Under 17 Track and Field Championships held at Bedford County Stadium on the first day of competition on Saturday 26th August 2017. Knight, who also won a Bronze medal in the Indoor Championships earlier this year, produced a new personal best performance of 15.41m in the Shot Putt, finishing second to West Cheshire’s George Hyde, who putted 17.42m for victory. For Knight, it was a superb achievement, and he still faces another year in his current age group, and he will continue to work under the guidance of his very proud coach Paul Reed, who predicts that his charge has a very bright future. Not so fortunate however, was middle distance runner Rory Leonard,
who just fractionally missed out on further progress in his heat of the Under 17 Men’s 1500m, finishing eighth in 4m02.96s, which was fourteenth fastest of the twenty-six competing. Morpeths Andrew Lawrence finished 2nd at the Druridge Bay Park Run on Saturday in
a time of 17mins 25secs behind Ashington's Kurt Heron who clocked 15mins 55secs and Morpeths U17 athlete Connor Marshall finished 4th (17:54). At the Newcastle event, sisters Lorna and Catriona Macdonald occupied the first two places in the Womens' race clocking 19mins 13secs and 19mins 19secs, respectively. Report by Les Venmore |
