Dan Dixon received the news he had long been hoping for at the weekend
with the announcement from England Triathlon that he had been selected to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, due to take place at the end of the month. With Olympic and World medallist Jonny Brownlee having to withdraw from the competition due to injury, Dan was chosen to take his place alongside previously selected Olympic silver medallist Alex Yee and 25 year old Leeds based Sam Dickinson. His selection comes on the back of his having represented Britain at both junior and senior level already. It’s hard to believe, but he’s still only 20 years of age! He has had a fine season so far in his first as a Senior, with podium finishes in America and Europe, including a European Under 23 Championship Silver medal in Poland, and a World Triathlon Championship Series debut in the mixed relay in Hamburg. Dan has been a member of the club (and also of Morpeth ASA) from a young age, and was coached originally by the late Tony Ward, who would have been justifiably proud of his progress. He’s also enjoyed the benefits of the wisdom of Mike Harris, three times British Triathlon Champion. The Ulgham based triathlete was naturally delighted with the news, saying, ‘At 20 years old, after doing this for 11 years, it is by far and away the most proud moment of my career. I’m honestly so excited to represent Team England at a Home Games.’ Commented Jonathon Riall, Team Leader for Triathlon and Paratriathlon for Team England, ‘Dan is a really exciting young triathlete who already has a lot of experience. He’s a committed and intelligent racer and I’m sure the opportunity to compete in Birmingham in front of a home crowd will be a great stepping stone in his career.’ Our many congratulations to Daniel and to all his endlessly supportive family, who must all be very proud of his selection. The Men’s Triathlon – to be held, ironically at Sutton Park, where many Harriers have taken part in national relays – will take place on Friday 29 th July at 11 am. Put the date in your diary now!
