The first day of the North Eastern Counties Athletics Association
Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Gateshead College
on Saturday 30th January, was dedicated to Field Events,
and Morpeth Harriers had five athletes in competitive action.

Two of them were in the Under 17 Men’s Shot.
Competing in the age group for the first time, Ruaridh Lang
could feel well pleased with his new best of 11.41m,
which also brought him a Silver behind Chester Le Street’s David Todd,
who produced a winning Putt of 14.18m.

Another Morpeth Harrier competing in this event was
Hugh Harry Weatherburn, who took a Bronze with 10.39m.

Morpeth’s Andrew Knight was agonisingly just nine centimetres short
of taking the Gold medal in the Under 15 Boys Shot,
with his personal best of 11.04m in the Under 15 Boys Shot.

In the Under 13 Boys Shot, Morpeth’s Daniel Lloyd produced
a personal best of 7.96m to take Silver, and club colleague
Charlotte Pickering Pruvot also took Silver in the
Under 17 Women’s Shot, with her best effort of 11.13m.

The second day of the Championships on Sunday 31st January,
was dedicated to Track events, and Morpeth Harriers had seven of their athletes in action,
and the club started well by producing the first Gold medallist of the day,
when rising Under 13 star Amy Lott won the 60m Hurdles in 10.55s, (a new personal best),
by just under a second from Tynedale Harrier Kate Smith.

Amy went on later in the day to compete in the flat 60m,
where she finished third in her heat in 9.28s,
which gave her a place in the B Final,
where she finished second, clocking 9.30s.

Morpeth Harriers next best performance came from Under 17 Man Sean O’Hara,
who finished second in his heat of the 60m clocking 7.37s,
and he went on to take a Bronze in the final behind Gateshead’s William Curtis,
and Darlington’s Ethan Crawford, clocking a slightly faster 7.30s,
which was a new personal best for the Eddie Hedley coached athlete.

Hannah Brown of Morpeth Harriers won a Bronze medal in the final
of the Under 17 Women’s 60m Hurdles, with her clocking of 9.69s;
which was a new personal best, and she went on later
to finish fourth in her heat of the flat 60m in 8.78s.

Fellow Morpeth Harrier and training partner Katie Hilton
also competed in the flat 60m, finishing third in her heat in 8.46s,
which earned her a place in the B final, which she won,
slightly improving her time to 8.40s, a new personal best.

Kirsty Lang, elder sister of Ruaridh, who had won a Silver medal
in the Under 17 Men’s Shot on the previous day,
added a bit more Silver to the family collection in the
Under 20 Women’s 60m Hurdles, where she clocked 10.42s,
which was a new personal best.

Morpeth Harrier Sam Yates had his first experience
of indoor competition in the Under 15 Boys 60m,
where he finished third in his heat in 8.13s.

No apology needed George.

5 Shot Putters returned with 4 silver and 1 bronze plus several new pbs.
Charlotte Pickering Pruvot had all 6 throws beyond her old pb which she improved by 97cm with 3 of her throws bettering the English Schools qualifying mark.
Andrew Knight had 5 throws past his old pb which was improved by 86cm.
Daniel Lloyd produced a new pb by 57cm and had 3 throws beyond his old mark.
Ruaridh Lang came second in his first outing as an U17 losing to an athlete a year older who was 5th at last seasons English Schools.
Hugh Weatherburn unfortunately injured himself but still produced a reasonable distance.
Thanks to Morpeth Harriers for supporting the squad with our training.
We may have had more medals but for injury and work commitments preventing participation.
