Two Silver Medals were won by athletes from Morpeth Harriers at the annual Northern Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Sheffield Arena on Saturday and Sunday 14th & 15th January 2017. Rory Leonard, Linden Homes Morpeth Harriers Athlete of the Month for November 2016, achieved his best ever individual triumph on Saturday, when he won a Silver Medal in the Under 17 Men’s 1500m. He posted an excellent new personal best time of 4m13.82s, which saw him better his previous best Indoor time by all of eight seconds. Another Morpeth result on Day 1, was that of Under 20 athlete David Thomas,
who finished seventh in the Triple Jump Final, with a best effort of 12.11m. On Day 2, Morpeth Harrier Andrew Knight secured an excellent Silver Medal in the Under 17 Men’s Shot Putt, putting a distance of 13.35m, which was a best performance for him indoors. In the same competition, clubmate Ruaridh Lang finished fifth with a best effort of 11.72m, which for him was also a best for indoors. Also on Day 2, David Thomas returned to the arena, to finish fifth in the Under 20 Men’s Long Jump with a best of 5.81m, which slightly bettered his previous indoor mark. In the Under 17 Women’s Shot Putt on Day 2, Morpeth’s Bobbie Griffiths putted 9.01m for twelfth place, which was an agonising three centimetres adrift of her personal best.

Well done to all the Morpeth athletes competing. Andrew Knights distance was technically an absoloute PB as he has moved into a higher age category and now throws a heavier shot. To medal when he's in his first year in the age group is a great performance. Ruaridh Lang also performed well and is now using the rotational technique in what is his second choice event. 16/1/2017 05:05:27 pm
